The southern Costa Blanca has the healthiest climate in Europe according to the World Health Organisation. It has about 325 days of sunshine per year and the average temperature is 20°C. Cool breezes blowing off the sea keep the temperatures warm but bearable, and the Las Salinas salt flats draw moisture from the air and create a unique micro-climate which many claim benefits sufferers from arthritis, rheumatism, asthma and other illnesses.

The southern Costa Blanca offers a more cosmopolitan atmosphere than its northern counterpart. The terrain here is much flatter when compared with the rocky coves of the north. The southern Costa Blanca has an abundance of golden sandy beaches. Overall this attractive coast has forty eight clean sandy or pebbly Blue Flag beaches. Torrevieja lies to the south of Alicante, and is a major resort with good amenities and leisure facilities. These include a theatre, casino and thriving night-life. It is said to be especially good for those with respiratory or allergy-related problems, because of the two salt lakes, Las Salinas, that together with the sea, surround the resort. Further south still is Mar Menor, one of Spain’s most popular tourist resorts, even in winter. It also has a huge saltwater lagoon protected from the sea by a narrow strip of land that boasts fine sandy beaches. Property in Torrevieja has been a good investment in the past, and the town is an excellect base from which to tour the southern Costa Blanca.

The southern Costa Blanca has many golf-courses, as well as abundant sporting and leisure opportunities. Several music festivals happen during the year, plus many local festivals which are often accompanied by extravagant fireworks displays. The region is a good location in which to buy a property if you want to sample the character of real Spain.
